Unreimbursed medical expenses can be claimed as a deduction together with your other itemized deductions if they exceed your standard deduction. Unreimbursed medical expenses can be deducted only to the extent your unreimbursed costs exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. For New Jersey, the threshold is only 2% of gross income.
Health Insurance premiums, transportation, therapists, nurses, prescription drugs, dental work can all be deducted as they are out of pocket medical expenses. You may also deduct the medical costs that are attributed to your dependents.
